Few places in the world are as well-positioned for success, with such high potential for growth and prosperity as the North Florida region.
The region radiating from Tallahassee, Florida,
throughout
the
New World Corridor from the First Landing
(Pensacola, Florida) to the First Continuous Settlement (St. Augustine, Florida)
is uniquely positioned for high-technology growth and prosperity. The region
enjoys access to spectacular beaches, more than 300 days of sunshine a year, a
low cost of living, ample available land, and one of the best-educated
populations in the nation.
A 2002 new economy index study of 66 of the largest U.S. and Florida cities ranks Gainesville and Tallahassee as the top two cities for workforce educational achievement nationwide – beating out such cities as Washington, D.C., Denver and San Francisco. Unlimited
Potential
The region is home to three major research universities: Florida State University and Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and the University of Florida in Gainesville. These world-class research centers receive billions of dollars in research grants, and technology developed by scientists and engineers can be transferred into exciting commercial applications.
Past
examples of such success include the anti-cancer drug Taxol, which was
isolated at the Florida State University Chemistry Department, earning
more than a billion dollars in royalties. Gatorade was developed at the
University of Florida, which each year licenses dozens of new technologies
in such diverse as from gene therapy, environmental engineering, software
development and agriculture. These research efforts are furthered by
world-class scientists studying at UF and FSU laboratories such as the
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee and Shands
Hospital in Gainesville.
With an educated
population base, established universities and research centers,
well-managed infrastructure and high quality of life, the region retains a
dynamic potential for growth.
